"How long do hair extensions last?" is the most common question we hear at Flirt Hair Extensions. The answer has two parts: how long each installation cycle lasts (before maintenance) and how long the actual hair lasts (before replacement).
Many salons are vague about this distinction, which leads to confusion and disappointment. At Flirt, we want you to have realistic expectations from day one.
The short answer: each installation cycle lasts 6 weeks to 4 months depending on the method. The hair itself lasts 6-12 months with proper care. This guide explains exactly what to expect for each extension type and how to maximise the lifespan of your investment.
Tape-In Extension Lifespan
Installation cycle: 6-8 weeks between maintenance appointments.
After 6-8 weeks, your natural hair will have grown approximately 1-1.5cm. This growth pushes the tape bonds away from your scalp, making them visible and less secure. At your move-up appointment, we remove the tapes, clean the bonds, apply fresh adhesive, and reinstall the same hair closer to your roots. The process takes about 60 minutes.
Hair lifespan: Our European Virgin Remy tape-in hair typically lasts 2-3 installation cycles, which means 12-18 months of total wear before new hair is needed. Each set of tapes can be retaped and reinstalled multiple times before the hair quality begins to diminish.
Factors that shorten lifespan:
Using shampoo with sulphates (strips hair moisture and weakens adhesive)
Applying conditioner or oil near the bonds (loosens adhesive)
Excessive heat styling without heat protectant
Sleeping with wet hair (causes matting)
Skipping or delaying maintenance appointments
Weft Extension Lifespan
Installation cycle: 8-10 weeks between maintenance appointments.
The cornrow braids that anchor weft extensions loosen as your natural hair grows. After 8-10 weeks, the braids need redoing to maintain a secure, hidden foundation. At maintenance, we remove the wefts, take out the old braids, wash and condition your natural hair, create fresh cornrows, and sew the weft hair back in.
Hair lifespan: Weft hair at Flirt lasts 6-12 months depending on care. Because the weft construction is more robust than individual tape strips, the hair tends to maintain its quality well through multiple reinstallation cycles.
Factors that shorten lifespan:
Sleeping without tying hair in a braid or bonnet (causes friction tangles)
Using harsh or drying products
Not conditioning regularly (wefts need consistent moisture)
Pulling or tugging at the weft tracks
Chlorinated swimming without rinsing afterward
Keratin Extension Lifespan
Installation cycle: 3-4 months between maintenance appointments.
Keratin bonds are the longest-lasting installation method. The protein-based bond remains strong for months, gradually weakening as your natural hair grows and the bond moves further from the scalp. At 3-4 months, the bonds are dissolved using a gentle keratin-safe solution and the strands are removed for reinstallation.
Hair lifespan: Our European Virgin Remy keratin hair lasts 6-12 months. The individual strands can often be re-tipped with fresh keratin and reinstalled, extending the total usable life of the hair.
Factors that shorten lifespan:
Using oil-based products near the bonds (dissolves keratin)
Excessive direct heat on the bond area
Not tying hair before sleeping (causes bond friction)
Swimming frequently in chlorinated water without protection
Attempting to remove bonds yourself instead of having a professional do it
How to Make Your Extensions Last Longer
Regardless of your extension method, these habits significantly extend both the installation cycle and the hair lifespan:
Use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. Sulphates strip natural oils from the hair and weaken adhesive bonds. Invest in a quality sulphate-free range — it protects both your extensions and your natural hair.
Brush properly, twice daily. Use a soft loop brush or wide-tooth comb. Start at the ends and work upward. Hold the roots or bonds while brushing to prevent pulling.
Protect your hair while sleeping. Tie your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail every night. Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction. Never sleep with wet hair.
Minimise heat styling. Air-dry when possible. When using heat tools, always apply heat protectant spray. Keep temperatures moderate — your premium extensions style beautifully without extreme heat.
Keep maintenance appointments on schedule. This is the single most important factor. Overdue maintenance puts stress on your natural hair and can damage both the extensions and your own hair.
Protect from chlorine and salt water. Wear a swim cap in pools. Rinse hair immediately after ocean swimming. Apply a leave-in conditioner before and after water exposure.
