Hair Extension Aftercare: The Complete Guide to Looking After Your Extensions
The definitive guide to caring for your hair extensions. Follow these tips and your extensions will look salon-fresh for months.
Why Aftercare Matters More Than You Think
Your hair extensions are an investment — and like any investment, the return depends on how well you look after it. At Flirt Hair Extensions in Pretoria, we have seen clients with identical extensions achieve vastly different results simply based on their aftercare routine.
Clients who follow our aftercare guidance get 9-12 months of beautiful wear from their extensions. Those who ignore it often need replacement hair within 4-6 months. The difference in cost and appearance is dramatic.
This guide covers everything you need to know about maintaining your extensions, regardless of whether you have tape-in, weft, or keratin bonds. These are the exact instructions we give to every client at their installation appointment.
How to Wash Hair Extensions Properly
Washing is where most extension damage occurs. Follow these rules:
Use sulphate-free shampoo only. Sulphates strip moisture from the hair and weaken adhesive bonds. Look for "sulphate-free" or "extension-safe" on the label. Brands we recommend: Kevin Murphy, Pureology, or any professional sulphate-free range.
Wash frequency: 2-3 times per week maximum. Over-washing dries out the hair. If your scalp feels oily between washes, use a dry shampoo on the roots.
Washing technique:
Gently detangle hair BEFORE getting it wet (wet tangles are much harder to remove)
Use lukewarm water — not hot
Apply shampoo to the scalp area and gently work it through, washing in a downward motion
Never scrub, bunch, or pile your hair on top of your head
Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends ONLY — never on the bond area
Rinse thoroughly in a downward motion
After washing:
Gently squeeze excess water with a microfibre towel (never rub)
Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray to the mid-lengths and ends
Allow to air-dry when possible, or blow-dry on low heat in a downward direction
How to Sleep with Hair Extensions
What you do at night has a huge impact on your extensions. Friction from tossing and turning causes tangling, matting, and bond damage.
Every night before bed:
Brush your hair thoroughly from ends to roots using a loop brush
Tie your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail — never a tight bun or high ponytail
If your hair is too short for a braid, use a soft scrunchie to loosely gather it
Invest in a silk or satin pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases create friction that roughens the hair cuticle and causes tangles. Silk and satin are smooth surfaces that allow your hair to glide as you move during sleep. This single change can add weeks to your extension lifespan.
Never sleep with wet hair. Wet extensions are more fragile and prone to tangling. Wet bonds (especially tape-ins) can loosen. Always ensure your hair is completely dry before bed.
For weft extensions specifically: A satin bonnet offers even more protection than a pillowcase, as it keeps the entire hair covered.
How to Brush Hair Extensions
Correct brushing prevents tangles and keeps your extensions looking smooth and natural.
Tools: Use a soft loop brush (sometimes called an extension brush) or a wide-tooth comb. Never use regular bristle brushes with ball tips — they can catch on bonds.
Frequency: Brush 2-3 times per day. Morning, evening, and after any activity that might cause tangles (exercise, wind, swimming).
Technique:
Always start at the ENDS of your hair and work UPWARD toward the roots
Hold the hair above the area you are brushing to prevent pulling on the bonds
When you reach the bond area, brush very gently over it — do not force through tangles
For stubborn tangles, apply a small amount of detangling spray and work through with your fingers first
Avoid:
Brushing from roots to ends (this pulls on bonds)
Using a regular brush with plastic-tipped bristles
Brushing aggressively when in a rush
Pulling through knots by force
Heat Styling with Extensions
One of the best things about premium European Virgin Remy hair extensions is that they can be heat-styled just like your natural hair. Here is how to do it safely:
Always use heat protectant spray. Apply to dry hair before any heat tool contact. This creates a barrier that prevents moisture loss and keeps the hair soft.
Temperature guidelines:
Blow-dryer: Low to medium heat, always pointing downward along the hair shaft
Straightener: 150-180°C is sufficient for our premium hair. Do not exceed 200°C.
Curling iron: 150-180°C with a quick-release technique (do not hold hair on the iron for more than 8-10 seconds)
Keep heat tools away from the bond area. This is especially important for tape-in extensions (heat softens adhesive) and keratin bonds (excessive heat near the bond can weaken it). Style from mid-lengths to ends.
Minimise heat frequency. The less heat you use, the longer your extensions will last. Embrace your natural texture on weekdays and save heat styling for events and weekends. Braids, twists, and air-dried waves are excellent low-heat options that look beautiful with extensions.
Swimming and Exercise with Extensions
You do not need to stop exercising or swimming when you have extensions. Just take a few precautions:
Swimming:
Wet your hair with clean water BEFORE entering a pool or the ocean — pre-saturated hair absorbs less chlorine or salt
Apply a leave-in conditioner before swimming for extra protection
Wear a swim cap in chlorinated pools whenever possible
Rinse your hair immediately after swimming
Deep condition your extensions after every swim session
Avoid prolonged soaking in hot tubs (the combination of heat and chemicals is harsh on bonds)
Exercise:
Tie hair in a secure braid or bun during workouts
After exercise, gently dry any sweat near the bond area (especially for tape-ins)
Wash hair within a few hours of heavy sweating to prevent salt buildup on bonds
A headband can help absorb sweat away from the hairline and bond area
Note for the first 48 hours after installation: Avoid swimming, heavy exercise, and washing during the initial bonding period. This allows the adhesive (tape-ins) or keratin to fully set.
Frequently Asked Questions
No — always use sulphate-free shampoo. Regular shampoos contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) which strip moisture from extension hair and weaken adhesive bonds. Sulphate-free formulas clean effectively without this damage. Kevin Murphy and Pureology are excellent options available at Flirt.
Wash 2-3 times per week maximum. Over-washing dries out the hair and loosens bonds faster. Use dry shampoo on the roots between washes if needed. Always wash in a downward motion and condition only the mid-lengths and ends.
Yes, our European Virgin Remy extensions can be coloured. However, we strongly recommend having colour work done at Flirt by a professional who understands how to protect the bonds during the colouring process. Home colouring risks damaging both the extensions and the bond area.
Avoid: sulphate shampoos, heavy silicone products (build up on bonds), oil-based serums near the bond area, alcohol-based styling sprays (drying), and any product labelled "volumising" or "texturising" at the roots (these often contain ingredients that loosen bonds).
