Can You Colour Hair Extensions? Everything You Need to Know
Yes, you can colour premium human hair extensions! Here is how to do it safely and what to avoid.
Can You Colour Hair Extensions?
One of the most common questions we receive at Flirt Hair Extensions is whether extensions can be coloured. The answer: if your extensions are 100% Remy human hair, then yes — they can be coloured, highlighted, toned, and glossed just like your natural hair.
Our European Virgin Remy extensions are real, unprocessed human hair with intact cuticles. They respond to colour the same way your own hair would. This gives you enormous flexibility to change your look, match a new natural hair colour, or add dimension without buying new extensions.
However, there are important rules to follow. Colouring extensions incorrectly can damage the hair, shorten its lifespan, or create an unnatural result. This guide explains exactly what is safe, what to avoid, and when to leave it to a professional.
What Colour Services Work on Extensions
Toning and glossing — Safest option
Toners and glosses are semi-permanent colour treatments that refresh, neutralise brassiness, or add subtle warmth/cool tones. They are gentle, deposit-only (no lifting), and do not damage the hair structure. This is our most recommended colour service for extensions.
Full colour (darker) — Safe
Going darker is straightforward. Depositing colour into the hair shaft is gentler than lifting it out. Our extensions accept permanent colour well. One tip: always go one shade lighter than your target because extension hair tends to absorb colour more readily than natural hair.
Highlights and balayage — Proceed with caution
Highlights involve lightening, which is a more aggressive chemical process. It can be done on our premium Remy extensions, but should only be performed by a professional who understands extension hair. Home highlighting is strongly discouraged.
Full bleaching — Not recommended
We do not recommend bleaching extension hair. The bleaching process strips pigment and weakens the hair structure significantly. If you want very light blonde extensions, it is better to purchase them in that colour rather than bleaching darker hair.
Rules for Colouring Extensions Safely
1. Always colour extensions BEFORE installation. Colour chemicals should not come into contact with tape adhesive or keratin bonds. If your extensions are already installed, the colouring must be done carefully to avoid the bond area — which is why it should only be done by a professional who works with extensions regularly.
2. Use professional-grade colour products. Box dyes from the supermarket contain harsh chemicals and unpredictable results. Professional salon colour is formulated for controlled, even coverage with less damage.
3. Test a small piece first. Before committing to a full colour service, colour a single weft or a few strands as a test. This shows exactly how the extension hair will react and what the final colour will look like.
4. Go darker, not lighter, when possible. Darkening extensions is safe and predictable. Lightening requires a developer that opens the cuticle and can cause dryness. If you need lighter extensions, consider buying a lighter shade rather than lightening your existing set.
5. Deep condition after colouring. Any colour service removes some moisture from the hair. A deep conditioning treatment immediately after colouring and weekly for the following month will keep your newly coloured extensions soft and shiny.
6. Do not colour synthetic or non-Remy extensions. Synthetic hair will melt or become discoloured. Non-Remy hair with stripped cuticles may absorb colour unevenly. Only 100% Remy human hair should be coloured.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! If you change your natural hair colour and your extensions no longer match, they can be professionally coloured to blend again. At Flirt, we offer colour matching and colour services for existing extensions. It is faster and more affordable than buying a new set of extensions in the new colour.
Gentle colour services (toning, going darker) have minimal impact on lifespan. Lightening or highlighting can reduce lifespan by 1-2 months if done aggressively. The key is using professional products, minimising developer strength, and deep conditioning regularly after colouring.
Yes! Purple shampoo is a gentle toning product that neutralises brassy yellow tones in blonde hair. It is safe for use on all extension types. Use it 1-2 times per week to keep blonde extensions cool-toned and vibrant. Rinse thoroughly to avoid purple staining.
